Detergents -

Cleaning the wood is the first priority in preparing to apply the finishes. It is necessary to remember what is necessary in this process. A good quality soap will remove gray wood, dirt build-up, mildew and some previous finishes to prepare the surface for the refinishing process. Bleaching the wood is not recommended, as bleach is not a cleaner, only a whitener and can create problems with the new finishes being applied. Bleach will also not remove gray wood fibers very well, which can lead to blotchy looking finishes and unnecessary hard powerwashing.
